Next show Oct 13th 2002 - Lost and Found Saloon - San Francisco, CA Well, this was it. The first ever Clevergirl show. First time Karen plays electric guitar. First time hearing the songs with a full band playing live. First time the sound guy takes a 20 minute speedball break and leaves us hanging on stage with no sound. The Lost and Found is a funny place. Full of hard drinkin' regulars taking a break from the North Beach strip bars, they don't like the idea a paying a cover to get in. See, normally they don't have bands here anymore. Though it's a shame cuz there's a great big stage, and the place is set up nicely for music. But whatever. We do have the advantage of being a bunch of girls, and guys will cough up the cash if their's even a remote chance of getting lucky that evening. We had the added bonus of playing with Koolie Cat. A local band of girls playing a rocky power pop set. They got the crowd going with their brassy banter and general raucousness. They have been doing really well in the Bay Area since then, so look for them and go see a show! Setting up at this place was fun. The only power outlet anyone could find in the place was about 20 feet up on the side wall. Not too accesible even with the aide of tall ladders and tall friends. Then the matter of how to turn on the stage lights. (this confusion all was due to the fact that no one at the bar seemed to know anything about the stage set up.) Where was the light switch? Where, o where? Turns out it was in the front of the room by the sound guy. Hmmm....of couse it was. But we didn't have our lovely Mike, the sound guy there to point that out until we had already set up all our gear by match and lighter. Either way, your fingers start to burn. Ok, well onward to the set. It was actually really fun. A ton of friends came out to see the Clevergirl train start rollin', and indeed it did. A few strange moments where Karen was perhaps playing an entire song a half step down...or was she? And Nurse Amy spent almost the whole set trying to resusiate a dying keyboard while playing. But hey, shit's bound to happen on the first show, and over all, we pulled off a helluva set. Only a handful of practices and 13 songs later.....a big phat thank you to Amy, Rosie and Brooke who made the whole night a reality. You guys are tops! And of course another huge thank you to the folks who braved North Beach parking to come see us play!!! Also thank you to Mike Milazzo for setting up the show and runnin' the board. |
