23rd 2003 - Thee Parkside - San Francisco, CA This was a pretty big night for us. We've only been playing together for a short time, and to be asked to play the Mission Creek Music Fest, was a very cool thing. Plus we got to open, on opening night at Thee Parkside. Doesn't get much better than that. The crowd was there early, and the place was buzzing right from the start. If you've ever been to the Parkside, you know that it's a really chill, neighborhood place to go. Great patio out back showing old skin flicks, cool bartenders, intimate stage area and none of the attitude that you get at some OTHER bars on that street. We were psyched to play. The Bay Area Buzz Magazine was there too. They helped sponser the MCMF, and it turns out they were really cool. It's also a women-founded mag. How great is that? Get yourself a copy, it's a solid read. So all that, combined, we were a little nervous going into it, but after a few songs, we began to settle in, and have a lot of fun. I think you guys did too, cuz by the end of the set, we had some dancing, and bobbing going on. Ah! don't deny it....we saw you. Jodi's family deserves some props, especially crazy Brian, for single-handedly getting the crowd to unfold their arms and actually enjoy the show by jumpin' around and hootin' and hollerin'. Can we hire you, Brian? Every band needs a Brian. We were followed by the ever-stylish Boyskout, playing their devo/joy division dark, yet sexy synth pop. And then the notorious NUBS. We finally got to witness Gino on the drums!! Not only did he rock as the stage manager that night - keeping everything in order (no easy task), but he's freekin' tight on the skins, y'all. Thanks Gino, you are a gem. Wrapping up the night was Turn Me On Dead Man. Great name, great band. They even had a groupie that pulled a li'l Kim near the front of the stage. A few of us caught her "hangin' out". TMODM was the kind of band that you can really enjoy with some earplugs and alcohol. Their front man Mike was a crazy, little red-suited bald dude, who commanded his arsenal of FX pedals like a magic man. Great big orange dude on keyboards (wish I'd heard the virus more), tall fro'd guy just tearin' it up on the drums - (damn), and the bassist - as hard as he tried to look tough from the waist up, with long flowing black hair and an evil goatee - he was wearing heavily pleated white pants. I do believe those boys have an evil sense of humor. Or an evil sense of style. Either way, it made for a really fun wrap up to a cool show. They rocked. Thanks to Jeff Ray and Mission Creek Music Festival for having us play. And to Geno, the Parkside, the Buzz and to you for coming out to support the not-so-dead local scene. |
