Oct 31th, 2003 - Castro Halloween Street Party - SF, CA

God it was cold. It was SSSSSooooooo unbelievably cold. And wet.

Yes. Wet and cold. Like every Halloween. I grew up outside of Chicago, and it's just as cold and miserable there during Halloween as it is in California! If I wanted that, I would never have moved away.

Ok, back to the task at hand. I'm having a hard time relating the surreal craziness of this evening. I think it all begins with us getting the opportunity to even PLAY this show. I mean, how many bands can say they played in the middle of Market street during one of the biggest national celebrations of Halloween??!!

The credit for that goes to Jean Spinosa. She runs the SoundSafe organization in SF, and was on the frontlines of setting up this stage for the big party that night. She even was the EMCEE for the stage, and looked a bit like a rockin' chick version of Johnny Depp in Pirates of the Carribbean. Thanks for letting us play Jean. It was something we'll never forget!!

We played on a stage made of two flatbed semi trucks. There were towers of speakers rising up to the heavens on either side of us. There was a stage crew, and lighting scaffolds, and a video projection playing live footage of the stage behind us...15 feet high!!

There was a backstage tent with deli trays of fruit, and meat and SUSHI!! There was even our own portapotty. Geez, I mean it was the royal treatment.

We were the first band to go on, and we were thrown up there with no sound check for any of the equipment, cuz they were an hour late setting up (rain). So the first song we didn't have any guitar, and the monitors were in and out through the set, but whatever. Looking out onto a sea of thousands of people was like nothing else. And with that many people, the pressure is surprisingly low. Too many people to care what anyone is thinking. Very cool.
